All candidates were interviewed Monday, June 22
The Selah School District chose three candidates for the superintendent position being vacated by Dr. Debra Howard June 30.
The candidates were selected during an executive board session Wednesday, June 17, by the board and educational review consultants.
The candidates chosen included: Dr. Eugue “Skip” Bequam, a retired superintendent from the Spokane area who most recently was an interim administrator at East Valley School District there, Dr. Rick Pass, the current superintendent of Knappa School District in Astoria, Ore. and Dr. Steve Chestnut, retiring superintendent from the Moses Lake School District.
Berquam has more than 25 years experience in public school administration including being a district superintendent, a district business manager and an elementary school principal.
Pass is the superintendent of the Knappa School District but submitted his intent to resign his position to the Knappa school board March 19 and has since been looking for a new position. He served in the Knappa School District for more than 25 years.
Chestnut has been at the helm of the Moses Lake School District for the past 12 years and has 18 years experience as a superintendent. He has more than 30 years experience as an educator.
Interviews were set to begin at 3:30 p.m. and finish up by 9:30 p.m. at the Selah Intermediate School cafeteria located at 1401 W. Fremont Ave.
Bequam was to kick off the string of interviews at 3:30 p.m. but he removed his name from the list of potential interims citing health reasons.
Instead, Pass began the day with a 30-minute question and answer session with the Selah school board followed by a 30-minute question and answer session with the public. Lastly, a 30 to 45-minute executive and public debriefing session was held where the board asked Pass additional questions and the public had an opportunity to share their opinions of him.
Chestnut’s interview followed the same timeline but was set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The selected Interim Superintendent will serve at the SSD helm from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, when a permanent superintendent will be chosen. The school board has not said when they will make their final selection.
