Allen Schmid and John Gawlik will run for Denise Nichols vacant seat
The filing period ended for the November 2009 elections and despite five Selah City Council positions expiring only one is being contested for.
Denise Nichols decided not to run for her position this coming term and with her vacancy former councilman Allen Schmid and community member John Gawlik will compete for it.
Nichols said she and her husband will be vacationing for part of the year and she won’t have the time to commit to the council for another four years.
“We have a place in Tucson,” Nichols said. “We’re going to be snowbirds.”
Nichols retired from her position as the manager of Yakima Parks and Recreation in September of last year.
Other positions held by Paul Overby, Keith Larson, Dave Smeback and Kevin Jorgensen are expiring as well but they are running unopposed.
The positions currently held by Nichols, Overby and Larson are four year terms and Smeback and Jorgensen’s are two year unexpired terms.
Another contested run that will take place in November is for a seat on the Selah school board. Community member Frances Harris filed to run against incumbent Ryan Smith.
Harris was vocal in her opposition to the school board’s decisions with regard to SHS Principal Joe Jones intent to resign this past spring.
Kelliann Ergeson is running unopposed for the District 2 Selah School Board spot.
