Have you ever jumped in a castle made of Jell-O? Climbed down a tunnel of peanut brittle? Made an ice cream snow angel? Or seen a tornado of stringy spaghetti noodles? Probably not. These incidents can only be found in the movie, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
Flint Lockwood, a scrawny mediocre inventor, and his assistant Steve, a wild gummy bear loving monkey, dream of helping their small town, Swallow Falls. This tiny island is as famous for sardines as Washington is for their apples. When the rest of the world realizes that “sardines are gross,” that’s all Swallow Falls has to survive on.
Flint wanted to change this. He decided to create a machine called FLDSMDFR (Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator). This incredible invention uses water as fuel. While trying to show off to his town by making it rain hamburgers, the FLDSMDFR shoots off to the sky.
The incredibly ashamed Flint is thinking about quitting inventing all together. When all of the sudden, out drops a pickle, then a slice of cheese. Moments later, hamburgers plummet from the sky by the hundreds as snow does in the winter. This reminded me of when gumballs fell from the movie “Bedtime Stories.” Flint realizes that his own invention was just hovering in the sky.
Flint is now famous. Soon, everyone in the town is requesting for it to rain a different food. All this inventor has to do is program what ever food the city wants into his computer. Then the computer sends this message to the FLDSMDFR and in goes water from the clouds and out comes the food that was asked for. This was amazing! There was chicken, steak, ice cream, bacon, eggs, candy, and anything else demanded.
The 3D animation was one of the best I have seen. Everything was crystal clear and colorful. The only disappointing part was that there wasn’t as much 3D as I was hoping for.
Everyone is Shallow Falls is happy, until Flint’s invention gets overloaded. The next things seen are vast servings of food (larger then your car). Huge pancakes, hotdogs and doughnuts are falling. Flint knows he has to do something and fast. He just doesn’t know how to fly up to the machine, past all the huge pieces of food.
This movie made me feel cheerful and gave me a warm feeling in my heart. The acting was outstanding and all the sound was perfect. This movie is for people of all ages. The kids will love the humor and cute animals, while the parents will enjoy the theme of the film: Never give up, even if the odds are against you.
Editor’s note: This is an SIS student’s movie review. These reviews will run every week on a different film throughout the school year.
