Selah High School graduate, Carrie Schramm, was one of a handful of students whose achievements were highlighted at the recent WSU Spring Commencement May 3.

Schramm was one of 2,400 undergraduates and graduate students who participated in the University’s 112th spring commencement on the Pullman Campus.

Schramm received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in environmental engineering and a minor in mathematics. Her parents are Connie and Donald
Schramm of Selah.

During her tenure at WSU, Schramm was an officer in the Society for Women Engineers, was involved in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was active in mentoring a class in Mechanics of Materials.

For the past two years, she was involved in the WSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders, participating in a project to bring clean drinking water to 35,000 people in Kenya.

Schramm said her experiences and opportunities she encountered at WSU will be integral to her success in the future.

“I am very thankful for the opportunities given to me at WSU and have learned something from each one,” she said. “I have learned patience from being a student mentor. I have learned happiness and thankfulness from the people of Kayafungo in Kenya. I have a higher sense of community and look forward to future projects that will help the local and global community.”

Schramm comes by her interest in civil engineering naturally. Schramm’s father, Don, graduated from WSU with a degree in civil engineering and currently works for the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District.

Her older sister, LisaRene, is also a WSU graduate with a civil engineering degree and her younger brother, Steve, is a freshman at WSU currently working toward his certification in the civil engineering program.  Schramm said she credits her success to the love and support of her family.

Schramm plans on working over the summer at the East Wenatchee office of RH2 Engineering, Inc., but will return to Pullman in the fall to attend graduate school at WSU to study civil engineering.
