Lince Elementary School students are supporting the Yakima Valley’s annual Relay for Life Campaign in their on-going effort to bring awareness and support for the fight against cancer.
Each kindegarten through fourth grade classroom at Lince Elementary school received a jar from the Lince K*Kids titled, “Caring Makes Cents.”
The objective was to fill the jars with coins each week, adding to the goal of matching the dollar amount the K*Kids group collected in previous years.
So far this year, they have exceeded the previous goal of $300 and have committed to collecting $500 this year.
“Everyone has been so nice to bring in money to help people with cancer,” said K*Kids member and third grader, Kailee Comes.
“We are grateful to the scientists trying to find a cure for cancer,” Comes said.
Comes said she walks in the Relay for Life with her grandmothers.
The K*Kids will be raising funds until the end of May.
Lince Elementary School first got involved with the Relay for Life Campaign five years ago. After losing two secretaries to cancer, the staff members at Lince Elementary said, “We need to get involved.” Since its initial participation in Relay for Life, Lince has lost a first grade student to cancer and has a cancer survivor in first grade this year.
The Yakima Valley Relay for Life Campaign is one of the largest campaigns in the valley. Jeanne Maxwell, K*Kids advisor, said the organization has grown so much that Selah will have its own branch for the first time this year, housed on the Lince Elementary School campus. The Selah branch has pledged a goal of $120,000 as their contribution this year. And with 15 teams of 15 para-educators and teachers, the Selah Relay for Life group and the Lince K*Kids are busy gathering pledges and support from their community to meet their pledge.
The Relay for Life this year starts at noon Aug. 2 and will run for 24 hours until noon on Aug. 3. Luminaries light the track at night and are in memory of those loved ones lost to cancer.
Maxwell and Angie Steiner are K*Kids advisors and helped the kids with their fundraising.
