A Union Gap retailer recently made a large deposit at Selah’s clothing bank.
Christopher & Banks, a women’s clothing chain with a store in the Valley Mall, donated 11 large boxes containing more than 300 garments to Self
Help And Resource Exchange Services or SHARES, the clothing bank located inside the Civic Center.
Selah resident Amy Hinze became store manager at Christopher & Banks in March. Part of her new job is deciding where to donate clothing when it is not selling in the store at a certain price point.
The company leaves the decision to individual store managers with just one condition: the chosen non-profit organization cannot turn around and sell the donated clothing; it must give it away.
Hinze took this opportunity to help her own community.
“It’s really important to me,” Hinze said. “I was welcomed into the community. I love the community and I like giving back to it.”
Hinze contacted SHARES president, Jane Williams, to see if SHARES could use some quality women’s clothing.
“I was ecstatic because I love Christopher & Banks,” Williams said. “I know their clothing. It’s really nice.”
Williams has been rationing the Christopher & Banks donation, periodically putting out new pieces of clothing so customers have new choices each time they visit SHARES.
“The minute it’s somebody’s size that needs it, it’s one of the first things off the rack,” Williams said.
Racks at SHARES are currently well-stocked with professional clothing for women, but are short on clothing for infants and children. Donations
of clean, useable clothing and linens can be left at the Civic Center during business hours.
SHARES, which is open from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, provides people living within the Selah School District with free clothing, linens and small household items. Families can visit twice a month.
Williams said SHARES customers range from babies to great-great-grandmas and include college students, retired folks on fixed incomes and employed individuals who often visit SHARES on their lunch breaks.
Just more than a dozen volunteers staff the clothing bank. Additional volunteers are always welcome. Volunteers can work as little as one two-hour shift per month.
