More than 475 kids from John Campbell and Robert Lince Elementary Schools participated in the Selah Mileage Clubs, running for physical fitness, awards, and just for the fun of it.

John Campbell parent coordinator, Dana Kuhn, said 174 students achieved the 25-mile award T-shirt and have been wearing the bright green shirts around town.

The first through fourth grade running and walking club was held at both elementary schools and was coordinated by Kuhn and parent volunteer, Diane McDevitt at Lince. More than 25 parents and grandparents volunteered to help with the running club.

About 478 students participated at John Campbell on 20 Fridays, which was 100 percent participation, Kuhn said. The students racked up 9,392 miles. A teacher, Mitch Richards, also earned his 25-mile T-shirt.

McDevitt said 573 students participated at Lince Elementary, which amounted to 96 percent participation.  The students ran or walked a combined 4,393 miles, with top student, Mitchell Bishop, running 38 miles.

Kuhn and McDevitt started the Mileage Clubs at the two schools in order to provide more opportunities for fitness beyond the physical education program provided at the school.

Kuhn said parents provided awards, including tokens for each five miles earned. Corporate sponsors provided the 25-mile T-shirts. Sponsors were: Brian Harris Used Cars, Coffee at Tiffany’s, Helms Hardware, Java Jitters, McDonald’s, Pinnacle Plumbing, Red Apple Market, Selah Gym Kids, Morton Supply, Royal Bavarian Bakery, Selah Fitness Express, Selah Kiwanis Club, Subway, Tamaki Law Firm, Teriyaki Grille, Torkelson Construction, Dornex Fruit. Most donated money for the T-shirts. Subway provided sandwiches for children who earned an award, Java Jitters provided coffee to volunteers, and McDonald’s donated apple dippers. Clark Custom Remodeling donated water bottles.
