The Selah Covenant Church will open a Christian school this fall for grades one to four.
A Washington State Certificated teacher and one full-time assistant will teach 16 students in one room, allowing for a 1 to 8 ratio, said Kim Taylor, one of two volunteer administrators of the new school.
“The students will receive individualized attention,” Taylor said.
The school is in the process of inspections to become state approved and teach from several different Christian-based school curricula.
Private schools can operate without state approval, but if a parent wants to call the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and find out more information about the school they can only do so if the state has approved the school, Taylor said.
The school has chosen curricula that meets the school’s mission statement, which is to “cultivate fully devoted disciples of Jesus Christ by offering a Biblically-based curriculum,” and to promote “spiritual, emotional, physical, social and cognitive growth of the students.”
Three Fridays a month students, who will be required to wear uniforms, will be doing community service.
“We’ll be looking for projects appropriate for their age group,” Taylor said.
The school will take advantage of the public library on a specified day each week.
Taylor, and co-administrator, Kim Weedin, have advertised for the teaching position and a teacher will be chosen by the end of June. Taylor said the school is currently accepting applications, as well as student registrations.
The school will be a ministry of Selah Covenant Church, which has operated Agapeland Preschool since 1978 for preschoolers to Kindergarten students.
“Five or six of our students will go on to the school,” said Agapeland Administrator Linda Lay.
Lay said the school will be inaugurated during the 100th year of the church’s operation in Selah.
“It’s a wonderful time to take the ministry of the church to a whole new level,” she said.
She said the school has been a dream of a number of people, including Lucille Case, Jim and Mary Lydigson, Bessie Swaney, Sue Hiatt, and others.
“It has been their dream for years,” Lay said. “They are elated to see it happen. People are already offering scholarships.”
School colors will be red and gold and the mascot will be the lion. Agapeland’s mascot is the lamb.
The school will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., following the Selah School District schedule.
