In a short but sweet graduation ceremony Saturday, 242 Selah High School graduates said their goodbyes to high school and welcomed their future.

Selah Schools Superintendent Larry Parsons told the graduates that he hoped they had been taught how to think and to distinguish the subtle differences between right and wrong.

He exhorted the students to rely on their moral compass to navigate life, which included being faithful to their spouse “all the time,” keeping their word, doing what is best for the community and the world, and raising children to be honest individuals.

“We will be watching to see what kind of education you received,” he said. “Invite us to your 2028 class reunion.”

“I’ll be the old guy in the corner,” Parsons joked.

Principal Joe Jones said he attributed the qualities of one of his heroes, Teddy Roosevelt, to the class of 2008: energy, passion, loyalty, bold confidence, focus, tenacity, and a quick wit.

Roosevelt said, “Do what you can wherever you are,” Jones told the graduates.

Jones said the graduates demonstrated support and loyalty for their friends, and a passion and persistence to bring about change.

“Class of 2008, I am honored to share this memorable day,” Jones said.

Kyle Washut was the faculty chosen speaker. Krista Garcia was the class chosen speaker. Sasha Valdez, Jared Hunt and Jordan Isom were senior performers. Nick Colmenero presented the class gift, which were theater curtains for dances and school productions.

The faculty entrance, the March of the Vikings, Pomp and Circumstance and the recessional were performed by the Selah High School Viking Band.
