Miss Selah Pageant to be held April 25

The date and venue is set for the 2010 Miss Selah Pageant. It will be held Sunday, Apr. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Yakima.
Many changes have been made to the Miss Selah Pageant this year including that nominations for contestants must be made by a member of their community in order to be eligible to compete.

Price paid for graffiti

On a cold evening Nov. 24, 2008, three teenagers were caught by Troy and Brad Helms tagging their newly constructed Helms True Value Hardware store. Two were sentenced to community service and jail time in the Wapato City Jail.

Becker dedicates X-C win in memory of his mother


Selah High School cross country coach and teacher Rick Becker had been training extremely hard for his most recent race in Spokane, Wash. The hard work paid off as he won the 50+ year old division of the USA Nationals Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Feb. 13.


Yakima resident Richard Duarte came in to the Subway in Selah Tuesday, Jan. 12 and voted for Robert Lince Elementary School in the U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities Campaign.
The U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities campaign ended Friday, Jan. 15. Parents and organizers across Selah tried to snag every last vote as time winded down.

Businesses reflect on “Best” wins

In the Selah Independent’s first annual “Best of the Best” contest there were many close calls and many blowouts as far as voting goes.

As 2009 came to a close the Selah Food Bank was hard at work collecting food for Selah families.

Each quarter Yakima Valley Community College announces students who received honor roll status on the President’s or Dean’s List. For the fall quarter many students from Selah achieved the high standard and are listed below.

Selah Shell gas station robbed

Two male suspects entered the Selah Shell gas station at 313 North First St. Tuesday, Dec. 22 wearing ski masks.

The Selah School District received notice last month that seven more Selah teachers received National Board Certification. They now have a total of 13 teachers, six percent of certified staff, who are nationally certified.
