Golf: Three boys, girls headed to state

The Selah boys placed second in Districts at Horn Rapids Tuesday, totaling 345 points and second only to Ephrata’s score of 340.
8th Annual Canyon Marathon set for Saturday

It’s time to break out the shoes and get ready to run.
The 8th Annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon is set for this Saturday. The marathon begins at 8 a.m. in Ellensburg and finishes that afternoon in Selah.
Bob and Lenore Dolphin are co-directors of the race, and have been since the marathon began back in 2000.
“It’s a marathon put on by runners for runners,” Lenore Dolphin said.
Last year, more than 500 runners participated in the marathon, which was the biggest turnout in the program’s history.

Selah 5th place at Holder Relays

The Selah boys’ and girls’ track team combined for a fifth place spot on Saturday at the Holder Relays at Eisenhower.
The team accrued 65.5 points. The girls came in ninth place with 28.5 points, while the boys took fifth with 37 points.

Baseball: Vikings get road victory

Selah’s baseball team scored a narrow road victory at Othello on Tuesday, with a 4-3 edge over the Huskies.
The Vikings went on top 2-0 after two innings, and then the Huskies rallied in the third to tie the game.
Selah supplied two more runs in the fifth inning, and in the bottom of that inning Othello mustered just one more run.
Jake Fife had seven strikeouts and allowed only three hits for the game. Derek Welton substituted for him in the seventh and final inning. Matt Snider was the catcher.
The Vikings had six hits and two errors.
The Vikings went on top 2-0 after two innings, and then the Huskies rallied in the third to tie the game.

Selah dropped its last rifle league match to Yakima on Tuesday, and with only three available shooters the team fell 2331 to 2279.
Selah scored 2188 points, but received 91 handicap points to increase the total.
Selah concluded its season with a winning 8-7 record, though, and came in fourth place overall.
Jason Galloway led Selah with 473. Yakima’s Jim Humbard shot a 478.
Wapato won the 2008 Valley Rifle League Championship by edging out Tieton 2396 to 2394. Jack
Polumsky shot Wapato’s high score with 488, while Tieton’s Sarah Miles shot a 485.
Toppenish defeated Ellensburg 2219 to 2170. Troy Brown of Toppenish shot a 485, while Ellensburg’s Mel Goudge shot a 480.
Next week the Spring Gallery takes place, where all six teams will compete in a match consisting of eight targets, with two targets in each position.

Selah dominates Quincy

The Vikings dominated Quincy in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday at home, winning 20-1 in the first game, and 9-0 in the second.
In game one, Selah poured on 20 runs over just four innings. They tacked on eight runs in the second inning, then six in the third and six in the fourth.
The Jackrabbits’ one run came in the second inning. Quincy had five hits and four errors for the game.
The Vikings had 14 hits and only one error.
Justin Windsor pitched the opening game, with Matt Snider serving as catcher. Windsor also supplied three RBI and went a perfect 3-3.
Alex Fickes went 2-4 and drove in two runs. Jake Fife had two hits, one of them a triple, and also drove in two runs.
Derek Welton’s two hits were both doubles, and he had three RBI, while Stephan Schmidt hit 2-2 and had two RBI.
Welton took to the mound as the Vikings secured a second game shutout, striking out nine batters.

The Viking “C” fast pitch team shut out Davis’s junior varsity squad on Saturday at Gardner Field, winning a decisive 22-0 contest.
Viking pitcher Sharaya Kneff faced ten batters in three innings, and she struck out the last seven.
Selah’s 22 runs came on 15 hits, and the Vikings walked nine times. Five Vikings scored multiple hits.
The C-team improved its record to 7-0 this season.

Golf: Selah takes third at Golf invite

The Viking boys’ golf team placed third at the Grandview Invitational on Friday.
Selah scored 352 overall. J.J. Woods shot 79, while Tyler Sugden scored 82. Joe Thomas scored 98, Jimmy Wood 83, and Kyle Yates 98.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team placed seventh on Thursday in the Lee Dolquist at the Apple Tree Golf Course.
The Vikings scored a 410 overall. Viking Taylor Moore shot an 85 in that tournament.
Sonia Taylor shot 102, while Emily Harris shot 104, and Megan Jones and Brittany Wells each shot 119.

Soccer: Selah falls to Wildcats; Red Devils

The Vikings were swept Thursday 3-0 at Toppenish in a league soccer match.
The Wildcats scored two goals in the first half. The first came from Luis Valencia on an assist from Luis Alcala in the 10th minute.
At the 25-minute mark, Valencia scored another goal, this time on an assist from Cesar Sabalsa.
Sabalsa punched in his own goal in the 75th minute to complete the sweep.
Viking goalkeeper Paul Summerville had 12 saves as Selah dropped to 1-4 in league.
Selah fell to East Valley on Saturday in a shutout, as the Red Devils came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
East Valley’s Kurt Russell scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute. Mark Gutierrez provided the assist.
Viking goalkeeper Shawn Thompson had four saves.
